strategy: pirate codes
It's easy for organisational strategy to lose direction and get lost in a sea of detailed actions and rules about what to do, and not to do. But a smaller set of directions to the treasure, based on a few key principles like the codes used by 17th-century pirates, might be a better fit for steering a tight ship. In this video, we explore why long lists of very specific goals and rules tend to create confusion, complexity, and loopholes, and how a simpler approach based around a few big strategic goals and guiding principles can more clearly communicate intent, reduce risk, and redirect effort from enforcing compliance to delivering value.
